6 Beginner’s Tips For Water Sports: Wakeboard & Wakesurf

Wakeboarding and wakesurfing are this summer’s hottest water activities.

To help you get started with either sport, we have integrated the 6 most useful beginner’s tips!

As a new rider, experience a stress-free and fun-filled first session with our introductory guide.

1. How much does wakeboarding/wakesurfing cost?

Many of you are probably wondering whether or not these activities are expensive. How much will they set you back?

Contrary to popular belief, these activities are very affordable!

For example, take a look at one of our wakeboarding packages.

This package’s speedboat can hold a maximum of 7 people, so if you split the total package price of 1300 HKD into 7, each person ends up paying only 185 HKD, even on weekends and public holidays!

It should be noted that our licensed instructors have suggested that each new rider get 30 minutes on the board at a time to properly get the hang of things. Therefore, additional hours can be added on if your party is larger.

Included in the package price, as mentioned earlier, are our licensed instructors and boat crews. Both are highly experienced and will adjust the lesson and boat speed according to you, so there is no need to worry!

2. Where are the best locations to wakeboard/wakesurf in Hong Kong?

In general, Sai Kung is the best place to go. It is one of our favorite areas of Hong Kong! Its beautiful countryside will provide a picturesque backdrop of deep green and clear blue, perfect for your first or next session.

💡 If you choose Sai Kung, you can stop in Nam Fung Wan, Tai Long Wan, or Half Moon Bay. These are all great spots for water sports, so it is completely up to you where you go! You can also ask your boat captain for his or her recommendations.

👉 Check out one of our Sai Kung packages!

💡 Tai Po, another part of Sai Kung, has several lovely bays as well. These include Pak Shek Kok and Mirs Bay.

👉 Check out one of our Tai Po packages!

💡 Of course, there are also plenty of nice locations that are closer to Hong Kong Island, such as the surfing hot spots Big Wave Bay and Tung Lung Chau.

👉 Check out one of our urban packages!

💡 Please note that most of our packages are for morning sessions (9 AM to 12 PM), though we will try our best to accommodate you.

👉 Browse all of our water sports packages!

3. Is wakeboarding/wakesurfing for me?

Most likely! There is no age limit for these activities. Whether you are 5 or 65, you can learn to ride!

That’s right, even children can participate, as long as they are not afraid of the water!

(We provide life jackets in case you or anyone in your party does not know how to swim.)

There are also no weight restrictions, although lighter people will generally have an easier time getting started.

If you want to learn how to do tricks, wakesurfing may be a better choice for you, as it is cordless and less restrictive.

We will get into the differences between the two sports in the next section!

💡 If neither sport appeals to you, we offer other, increasingly popular water sports, such as flyboarding, hoverboarding, and jet skiing.

👉 Check out one of our hoverboarding packages!

👉 Check out one of our jet skiing packages!

4. What is the difference between the two sports?

So, what exactly is the difference between wakeboarding and wakesurfing?

Well, wakeboarding basically entails surfing atop the waves created by the wake of a speedboat that is pulling you along.

There are boots attached to the wakeboard that you strap into, so it is similar to snowboarding.

While riding, you hold onto a cord attached to the speedboat so that you stay afloat behind it.

Wakesurfing is essentially the same activity, except it is more similar to surfing.

This is because it is cordless, and there are no straps for your feet, making this sport less restrictive and more ideal for doing tricks!

👉 Check out one of our wakesurfing packages!

5. Can wakeboarding/wakesurfing be dangerous?

To be fair, every sport has a certain level of risk.

A bit of physical fitness is necessary, as the body needs to maneuver the waves while keeping its balance.

Therefore, muscle strain is a possibility; however, if you fall off your board, the most you will get is a mouthful of salt water.

To reduce the chance of injury, please follow the professional guidance of your licensed instructor to maintain the correct posture and develop the fundamental skills.

Appropriate protective equipment, warm-up exercises, and safety rules should also be incorporated.

Again, we offer life jackets for those who want them.

The most important thing is to relax and have fun!

6. I’m worried about making a mistake and crashing. Any advice?

Yes! Don’t worry!

It is normal for beginners to feel nervous, but it is important that you try to relax.

Pulling at the cord and remaining tense and tight will only make you less balanced and increase the chances of your falling off.

When you relax, you will be more comfortable maneuvering the waves.

Also, do not try to stand too early!

Beginners are often anxious to get started and ride successfully, but standing too early will negatively affect your balance.

Take it slow and easy your first time!

Learn the basics first, then try to do tricks; otherwise, you run the risk of straining yourself and losing your balance.

The basics will include finding your center of gravity, which will help you feel confident on the board!

We hope that our brief guide has inspired you and your friends to get your adrenaline fix out on the water this weekend!

Each menu variation has four courses: appetizers, salads, hot dishes, and desserts. Menu C also has a carving station!

Although each menu’s selections differ, here are some items you can expect:

You also have the option to add on professional catering services for either 4 hours or 8 hours, depending on your needs, making this package versatile for any type of event!

Light Meal Set

A much lighter alternative to our buffet set is, well, our light meal set!

This set has three tiers: the standard cocktail party menu, the superior cocktail menu, and the deluxe cocktail menu.

Each menu requires a minimum of 25 people (the deluxe menu requires a minimum of 30), and each averages about 8-10 pieces of food per person, with differing selections.

Menus A and B feature cold canapés, sandwiches, hot finger foods, and desserts, including:

  • Pesto Tomato With Smoked Mozzarella Cheese
  • Smoked Salmon Rosettes
  • Sushi Platter (California Rolls & Tuna Maki Rolls ) – Menu B Only
  • Bacon Wrapped Scallops
  • Vegetable Samosas With Mint Sauce
  • Tandoori Chicken Kebabs
  • Mini Fruit Tarts

Beverages are also included in both menus, although Menu B boasts a two-hour free flow of non-alcoholic beverages!

The final menu, Menu C, has the aforementioned dishes, plus a few more.

It is the most extravagant of the three, as it includes wine and beer, as well as a dim sum station for dumplings!

Professional catering services are also available for this set.

The Difference Between different Water Sports: Wakeboard & Wakesurf

8 Water Sports To Try In Hong Kong

Ever wanted to try wakeboarding?

What about wakesurfing?

Aren’t they pretty much the same thing?

Not quite!

Keep reading for an introduction to these two unique water sports!

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding evolved from a combination of various sports, namely water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing.

This sport involves coasting on the waves created by the wake of a speedboat. These waves mimic real ocean waves, big enough to ride and even do tricks upon! The rider is towed along behind the boat with a connecting rope.

By far our most popular water sports option, wakeboarding is essentially like wakesurfing, but with a few main differences.

Instead of throwing the connecting rope back to the boat after finding his or her balance as in wakesurfing, riders hold on to the rope to be kept in tow of the speedboat pulling them along.

Due to the specific type of board used in this sport, holding on to the rope is the only way to keep afloat.

Another difference is that wakeboards have boots attached that riders stay strapped into, allowing them to reach faster speeds and greater heights.

These differences make wakeboarding much easier to learn for most people.

Sound reassuring?

Try wakeboarding with us!

We have 2-hour, 3-hour, and 4-hour rentals available.

Some packages can service up to 8 people, so bring your friends!

Wakesurfing

Just like wakeboarding, wakesurfing involves surfing in the wake of a speedboat, atop the waves created by the boat.

Initially, the speedboat pulls the rider out of the water as he or she holds on to the connecting rope.

Once the rider starts riding comfortably, he or she throws the rope back onto the boat, leaving his or her hands completely free!

This sport can be a bit more challenging to pick up at first, especially as riders aren’t attached by boots to the board itself. (The advantage in this is having more freedom for maneuvering and performing tricks.)

Not to worry, however; our boat crews are very friendly and helpful in teaching the basics!

Check out one of our wakesurfing packages for a private session in the gorgeous countryside of Hong Kong: Sai Kung!

Victoria Harbour Night Cruise: See Hong Kong’s Best Night View By Yacht

Everyone is probably already familiar with Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour and the stunning night views it offers.

After all, one of the most popular tourist attractions of this fast-paced city is the Symphony of Lights, the world’s largest permanent light and sound show (according to the Guinness Book of World Records), which is viewable primarily from the Tsim Sha Tsui side of Victoria Harbour.

This time around, however, take in this famous nightscape in a new and different way! Hear me out…

Just last Sunday, I boarded a medium-sized yacht in Victoria Harbour with my party of around 25 people. We cruised around the harbour as the sun was setting, and after it became dark. We even watched the famed Symphony of Lights. This was my first time doing a cruise like this in Victoria Harbour, and it was really intoxicating to see it all from the center of the bay. After the show, the yacht took us to Lei Yue Mun to have an extravagant seafood feast and end the evening.

Overall, it was an incredible experience, and I wanted to share it with everyone, so keep reading for all the details!

Views From The Harbour

🌃 Night Cruise & Light Show ☄️

Suggested Route: Tsim Sha Tsui Pier → Night Cruise Around Victoria Harbour [Avenue of Stars/Hong Kong Cultural Centre/Hong Kong Museum of Art] → Lei Yue Mun [Dock For Seafood Dinner] → Tsim Sha Tsui Pier

On that same day, we all gathered at the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier at around 7:20 PM, so we could depart right on time at 7:30 PM.

By boat, we passed the Avenue of Stars, as well as some other famous buildings of Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. We were lucky that the weather was cool; the slight sea breeze felt so relaxing and peaceful.

About half an hour later, the Symphony of Lights was about to begin. Where we were in the center of the bay was definitely the best place to watch the show. It was even better than the view from Tsim Sha Tsui! Several skyscrapers released beams and fans of colorful lights and lasers that ignited the entire harbour. The lights constantly changed and flashed, making everything they touched seem full of life. As the show progressed, the lights began flashing faster and faster, until finally, all the buildings were lit up at the same time. This was the climax; the brightest moment! We all quickly remembered our phones and captured the picture-perfect finale just in time.

The Symphony Of Lights

Note: In addition to the Symphony of Lights, some people will choose to do night cruises during special festivals and holidays, such as National Day, New Year’s Eve Countdown, and Lunar New Year, to watch the massive firework displays in Victoria Harbour. (If you are interested in such a cruise on such an occasion, please get in contact with Yacht Holimood as early as possible to book your spot on one of their boats!)

🐟 Seafood Dinner 🍴

After the show, our boat captain took us to Lei Yue Mun, just a few minutes east of Central Hong Kong. We were able to dock and get off the boat to enjoy an amazing fresh seafood dinner at Lei Yue Mun Seafood Restaurant. Feast is probably a more accurate word to use here than dinner, as we all ate a LOT! Then again, everything was so good! My favorite dish was the steamed scallops with salt and pepper, though the garlic lobster was a close second. Both were so sweet and delicious! (Pictures below.)

Note: Your boat captain will usually recommend some routes worth taking and sights worth seeing. So, if you don’t know where to go next time, ask your captain, as he or she may be able to add some nice surprises to your itinerary! (In fact, the restaurant we ended up at that night was according to the captain’s recommendation, and he most definitely knew what he was talking about!)

Steamed Scallops With Garlic Fans

Garlic Lobster

Salted Prawns

After eating until we were ready to burst, we were taken back to the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier by about 10:00 PM. It was the perfect ending to a great night!

🛥️ Our boat for the night was this one, which was an evening city yacht. The boat was fully equipped, but there was no catering included; however, Yacht Holimood offers several great meal packages as add-ons, which you can check out here.
💁 Or, as I mentioned above, just talk to your boat captain ahead of time, so he or she can arrange to dock at a good spot for dinner!

Top 3 Hong Kong Urban Cruise Routes + Yacht Recommendations

Are you planning a junk boat party soon, but don’t want to venture all the way out to Sai Kung?

Would you rather explore Hong Kong’s closer urban bays instead?

Most of us who have lived in Hong Kong for awhile have been to Sai Kung. The lush green islands and the clear blue waters are truly a sight to see.

But after indulging in Sai Kung’s views time and time again, it is understandable that we are a bit tired of the same old same old.

It may be that “we don’t know what we have until it’s gone,” but either way, city cruises are now the scene of choice for many of us, and perhaps for you!

In this blog, we have integrated Hong Kong’s 3 most popular urban cruise routes, as well as our recommendations for you to help you plan your next boat party!

1. Closest Choice: Clear Water Bay

Top 3 Hong Kong Urban Cruise Routes + Yacht Recommendations

Located a bit north of the Victoria Harbour Piers (Tsim Sha Tsui/Central/Wan Chai), this spot is just a short journey away. So, if you want to swim a little closer to Central, then Clear Water Bay is the best place to boat!

Clear Water Bay is home to one of the most famous beaches in Hong Kong, Clear Water Beach. As its name implies, the water in the area is pristine, and the surrounding environment is serene. From your boat, you can see the beautiful scenery of the Weng Mountain and a nearby golf course. Conveniently located near the city, Clear Water Bay attracts many people to it every year and is a most popular boating destination in Hong Kong.

If you choose to stay in the area for dinner, Lei Yue Mun is a great choice, as is eating fresh seafood in Toi O. Be sure to discuss your plans with your boat captain in advance though, as there may be a discount to the additional charge for staying out later.

Deep Water Bay is also home to one of Hong Kong’s famous beaches. Because of the bay’s beautiful landscapes, many tourists travel from far and wide each year to enjoy the sun and the sea there. Due to the depth of the water in this area, it is especially suitable for surfing or sailing. Other water activities are popular here as well.

South Bay

Not interested in entertaining a crowded beach? The semi-hidden South Bay might be a better choice! There are usually fewer people in this area than at the other major beaches in the Southern District, so this spot is great if you value tranquility, peace, and quiet.

For dinner, there is absolutely delicious local seafood in Aberdeen. Again, be sure to discuss your plans with your boat captain in advance, as there may be a discount to the additional charge for staying out later!
