It’s Saturday again, what can we do today? All the streets are filled with the same old shopping malls, it’s so boring! Going to an outlying island for vacation seems a bit far, where can we find good food and things to do nearby?

Have you ever thought that there are many fun activities and good food in Kwun Tong, a nearby district? Plus, you can even stay in a brand new houseboat and chill for two days and one night!

As a famous industrial district in Hong Kong, Kwun Tong has a wide variety of industrial buildings, hidden food gems, and fun places to hang out. It’s now a hub for all kinds of trendy events, cafes, creative shops, and unique indoor sports facilities, not to mention a variety of top restaurants!

Let’s explore how we can eat and play to our hearts’ content in Kwun Tong!

1. Kwun Tong Promenade

When people talk about the landmarks of Kwun Tong, the Kwun Tong Promenade is most likely the first thing that comes to mind. It used to be a public cargo handling area, used for loading and unloading waste paper. The promenade is about one kilometer long, and in addition to being able to enjoy a beautiful night view of the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour and Lei Yue Mun, you can also escape from the hustle and bustle of Kwun Tong’s city center.

The promenade is also decorated with unique art installations, such as the crane and waste paper bundle sculptures, which pay tribute to the area’s history as a cargo handling area. At night, the installations light up and emit smoke, illuminating the promenade, making it a great photo spot!

2. GoNature

If you want to try something new, how about an indoor sports facility? GoNature is the largest indoor rock climbing gym in Hong Kong, covering an area of 6,500 square feet, and featuring walls of varying difficulty levels! Whether you’re a beginner or a climbing expert, you can enjoy the fun of rock climbing.

The venue has more than 100 climbing routes and bouldering challenges, and offers entry-level courses for beginners, children’s classes, and parent-child classes. Learn more here!

3. Ikari Area

In addition to the indoor sports facility, Kwun Tong also has a place where you can release your stress! After a long day of work or study, it’s essential to find a place to vent your pent-up anger. The Ikari Area is a great place to let off steam. It encourages people to take up a bat and smash things to pieces to vent their negative emotions.

The room is filled with old washing machines, refrigerators, and piles of breakable items, making the destruction process extremely satisfying. Learn more here!

After a walk along the promenade, or finishing your workout/venting session, you’ll need some good food to replenish your energy! As a famous industrial district, Kwun Tong has many hidden food gems with great value for money in the office buildings! Hoi Tide Kitchen is one of them! Basically, everyone who works or lives in Kwun Tong has eaten there!

One of their most famous dishes is the scallion egg sandwich! The eggs are mixed with milk and fried, so they are particularly smooth and delicious!

Another must-try dish is the spicy pasta with shredded chicken and pork cubes! Although it sounds strange, it’s incredibly tasty! If you have the chance to go to Hoi Tide, be sure to order it!

If Hoi Tide doesn’t appeal to you, and you want to eat some stir-fried dishes, why not try the New Gathering Restaurant? Also located in an office building, this hidden gem will definitely open your eyes!

My personal favorite is their oyster pancake! It’s a big portion and full of oysters, and it’s crispy and delicious!

Apart from the oyster pancake, their plum pork ribs are also very popular! The sauce is sour and sweet, the meat is tender and juicy, and it’s perfect with rice!

Have you ever thought of staying in a super nice and simple houseboat for two days and one night, making it more convenient and comfortable to eat and play? If you want to know more about the boat and its facilities, you can refer to our previous staycation experience on the boat!

The boat is moored in the Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter, so we need to take a speedboat or a sampan from the nearby Kwun Tong Public Pier to the boat. If you choose to take the subway, it’s about an 11-minute (800-meter) walk from the public pier to the Kwun Tong MTR station, so it’s easy to find!

The check-in time for the boat is 3:00 PM, and the check-out time is 12:00 PM, so make sure to plan your time well to enjoy your staycation to the fullest! Also, please note that the sampan service is free for check-in and check-out, but will cost $50 HKD per trip after that. This boat only stays in the shelter and will not go to sea. If you want to find a yacht for water activities, it may not be suitable for you!

If you don’t want to go to Kwun Tong, there are also large and spacious houseboats available in Aberdeen! Learn more here!
