6 Beginner’s Tips For Water Sports: Wakeboard & Wakesurf

Wakeboarding and wakesurfing are this summer’s hottest water activities.

To help you get started with either sport, we have integrated the 6 most useful beginner’s tips!

As a new rider, experience a stress-free and fun-filled first session with our introductory guide.

1. How much does wakeboarding/wakesurfing cost?

Many of you are probably wondering whether or not these activities are expensive. How much will they set you back?

Contrary to popular belief, these activities are very affordable!

For example, take a look at one of our wakeboarding packages.

This package’s speedboat can hold a maximum of 7 people, so if you split the total package price of 1300 HKD into 7, each person ends up paying only 185 HKD, even on weekends and public holidays!

It should be noted that our licensed instructors have suggested that each new rider get 30 minutes on the board at a time to properly get the hang of things. Therefore, additional hours can be added on if your party is larger.

Included in the package price, as mentioned earlier, are our licensed instructors and boat crews. Both are highly experienced and will adjust the lesson and boat speed according to you, so there is no need to worry!

2. Where are the best locations to wakeboard/wakesurf in Hong Kong?

In general, Sai Kung is the best place to go. It is one of our favorite areas of Hong Kong! Its beautiful countryside will provide a picturesque backdrop of deep green and clear blue, perfect for your first or next session.

💡 If you choose Sai Kung, you can stop in Nam Fung Wan, Tai Long Wan, or Half Moon Bay. These are all great spots for water sports, so it is completely up to you where you go! You can also ask your boat captain for his or her recommendations.

👉 Check out one of our Sai Kung packages!

💡 Tai Po, another part of Sai Kung, has several lovely bays as well. These include Pak Shek Kok and Mirs Bay.

👉 Check out one of our Tai Po packages!

💡 Of course, there are also plenty of nice locations that are closer to Hong Kong Island, such as the surfing hot spots Big Wave Bay and Tung Lung Chau.

👉 Check out one of our urban packages!

💡 Please note that most of our packages are for morning sessions (9 AM to 12 PM), though we will try our best to accommodate you.

👉 Browse all of our water sports packages!

3. Is wakeboarding/wakesurfing for me?

Most likely! There is no age limit for these activities. Whether you are 5 or 65, you can learn to ride!

That’s right, even children can participate, as long as they are not afraid of the water!

(We provide life jackets in case you or anyone in your party does not know how to swim.)

There are also no weight restrictions, although lighter people will generally have an easier time getting started.

If you want to learn how to do tricks, wakesurfing may be a better choice for you, as it is cordless and less restrictive.

We will get into the differences between the two sports in the next section!

💡 If neither sport appeals to you, we offer other, increasingly popular water sports, such as flyboarding, hoverboarding, and jet skiing.

👉 Check out one of our hoverboarding packages!

👉 Check out one of our jet skiing packages!

4. What is the difference between the two sports?

So, what exactly is the difference between wakeboarding and wakesurfing?

Well, wakeboarding basically entails surfing atop the waves created by the wake of a speedboat that is pulling you along.

There are boots attached to the wakeboard that you strap into, so it is similar to snowboarding.

While riding, you hold onto a cord attached to the speedboat so that you stay afloat behind it.

Wakesurfing is essentially the same activity, except it is more similar to surfing.

This is because it is cordless, and there are no straps for your feet, making this sport less restrictive and more ideal for doing tricks!

👉 Check out one of our wakesurfing packages!

5. Can wakeboarding/wakesurfing be dangerous?

To be fair, every sport has a certain level of risk.

A bit of physical fitness is necessary, as the body needs to maneuver the waves while keeping its balance.

Therefore, muscle strain is a possibility; however, if you fall off your board, the most you will get is a mouthful of salt water.

To reduce the chance of injury, please follow the professional guidance of your licensed instructor to maintain the correct posture and develop the fundamental skills.

Appropriate protective equipment, warm-up exercises, and safety rules should also be incorporated.

Again, we offer life jackets for those who want them.

The most important thing is to relax and have fun!

6. I’m worried about making a mistake and crashing. Any advice?

Yes! Don’t worry!

It is normal for beginners to feel nervous, but it is important that you try to relax.

Pulling at the cord and remaining tense and tight will only make you less balanced and increase the chances of your falling off.

When you relax, you will be more comfortable maneuvering the waves.

Also, do not try to stand too early!

Beginners are often anxious to get started and ride successfully, but standing too early will negatively affect your balance.

Take it slow and easy your first time!

Learn the basics first, then try to do tricks; otherwise, you run the risk of straining yourself and losing your balance.

The basics will include finding your center of gravity, which will help you feel confident on the board!

We hope that our brief guide has inspired you and your friends to get your adrenaline fix out on the water this weekend!

The Difference Between different Water Sports: Wakeboard & Wakesurf

8 Water Sports To Try In Hong Kong

Ever wanted to try wakeboarding?

What about wakesurfing?

Aren’t they pretty much the same thing?

Not quite!

Keep reading for an introduction to these two unique water sports!

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding evolved from a combination of various sports, namely water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing.

This sport involves coasting on the waves created by the wake of a speedboat. These waves mimic real ocean waves, big enough to ride and even do tricks upon! The rider is towed along behind the boat with a connecting rope.

By far our most popular water sports option, wakeboarding is essentially like wakesurfing, but with a few main differences.

Instead of throwing the connecting rope back to the boat after finding his or her balance as in wakesurfing, riders hold on to the rope to be kept in tow of the speedboat pulling them along.

Due to the specific type of board used in this sport, holding on to the rope is the only way to keep afloat.

Another difference is that wakeboards have boots attached that riders stay strapped into, allowing them to reach faster speeds and greater heights.

These differences make wakeboarding much easier to learn for most people.

Sound reassuring?

Try wakeboarding with us!

We have 2-hour, 3-hour, and 4-hour rentals available.

Some packages can service up to 8 people, so bring your friends!

Wakesurfing

Just like wakeboarding, wakesurfing involves surfing in the wake of a speedboat, atop the waves created by the boat.

Initially, the speedboat pulls the rider out of the water as he or she holds on to the connecting rope.

Once the rider starts riding comfortably, he or she throws the rope back onto the boat, leaving his or her hands completely free!

This sport can be a bit more challenging to pick up at first, especially as riders aren’t attached by boots to the board itself. (The advantage in this is having more freedom for maneuvering and performing tricks.)

Not to worry, however; our boat crews are very friendly and helpful in teaching the basics!

7 Water Sports To Try In Junk Boat Charter Party

8 Water Sports To Try In Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known for being one of the world’s international urban hubs. Life in the city is busy and fast-paced, and one can get lost in the hustle and bustle.

As a result, many locals escape to Hong Kong’s lush countryside on the weekends. There, they can soak in the sunshine, relax on the water, and take a much-needed break.

Because Hong Kong has such beautiful natural areas, junk boating is quite popular. In the humidly hot summer months, what better way to cool off and let loose than partying on a junk boat in the middle of a bay?

And a huge fun factor of junk boating is, of course, the water sports!

So, let us introduce to you 7 of our favorite water sports that you should try while in Hong Kong!

1. Wake Surfing

Our very first water sport is wake surfing! This sport involves surfing in the wake of a speed boat, atop the waves created by the boat. These waves mimic ocean waves big enough to ride and even do tricks!

Initially, the speed boat pulls you out of the water with a rope, but once you start riding comfortably, you throw the rope back onto the boat, leaving your hands completely free!

Some have described the feeling as a combination of traditional surfing and snowboarding.

Although it can be a bit challenging to pick up at first, our boat crew is very friendly and helpful in teaching the basics.

Check out one of our wake surfing packages for a private session in Sai Kung!

2. Wake Boarding

Wake boarding evolved from a combination of various sports, namely water skiing and surfing.

By far our most popular option, this sport is essentially like wake surfing. The difference is that, instead of throwing the rope back onto the boat after starting, you hold onto the rope to be kept in tow. Due to the type of board used in this sport, holding onto the rope is the only way to keep afloat.

This difference makes wake boarding much easier to learn for most people! Sound reassuring?

Try wake boarding with us! We have 2-hour, 3-hour, and 4-hour rentals available. Some packages can service up to 8 people, so bring your friends!

3. Fly Boarding

You may have already heard of wake surfing/wake boarding, but what about fly boarding?

Also known as “hydro flying,” this exciting extreme water sport will give thrill-seekers exactly what they’re looking for!

The sport’s boots are attached to a sort of platform connected by a long hose to a speed boat. As the speed boat accelerates, the water will be propelled through the hose and out of the openings on the platform, literally taking you to new heights! (You can reach up to 40 feet/12 meters!)

We offer private sessions in Deep Water Bay with a licensed instructor. More information on this package can be found here!

4. Hover Boarding

Similar to fly boarding, hover boarding is a more familiar alternative that you might like to try!

The two sports are cousins, as they were actually invented by the same person! The main difference is that fly boarding offers more vertical movement, while hover boarding is more horizontal.

Just like fly boarding, your boots are attached to a hover board that is connected by hose to a speed boat. After acceleration, you are then propelled out of the water and into the air!

To break it down, this sport is basically a water version of skateboarding or snowboarding, except with a jet engine at the rear.

Try it out in Deep Water Bay with our exclusive package!

5. Jet Skiing

Another popular water sport is jet skiing!

With this activity, you have 100% complete control, as you are not attached to anything else. (It’s just you and the jet ski, out on the open ocean!)

Jet skiing is pretty easily picked up by most; it just takes some time to get used to turning. A word of encouragement: it is almost impossible to turn too sharply and fall off!

You can, however, go too fast and hit a badly timed wave, accidentally knocking you overboard. If this happens, take your time remounting the jet ski, as trying to do so too quickly can cause it to flip.

With all of these water sports, but especially this one, be sure to apply sunscreen a few minutes beforehand! The sun rays reflecting off the water around you will give you a nasty burn, and that’s speaking from experience!

If you’ve got your sunblock ready to go, head to Aberdeen for your adrenaline fix! More information here.

6. Kayaking

So far, we’ve covered some pretty action-packed water sports. But what about some less extreme activities?

Kayaking can be done both recreationally/on its own, and incorporated into more serious sports, such as kayak diving.

Many people confuse kayaking and canoeing. The main difference is in the paddle; canoe paddles are single-bladed, while kayak paddles are double-bladed, meaning there is a blade on each end of each paddle. The difference also lies in the way you sit; in canoes, you kneel, or sit on a seat. In kayaks, you sit on a low seat, almost on the floor. (Currently, we only offer kayaking!)

Our kayaks are usually rented out as part of a boat package. After docking, the kayaks are brought out to enjoy in one of the many bays of Hong Kong! Check our website for more information.

7. Paddle Boarding

Last but not least, a personal favorite: paddle boarding!

This traditional sport is done by kneeling on a board and paddling with your hands. A relatively new version of this is stand up paddle boarding, or SUP!

This sport’s flexibility is endless; you can practice yoga, go sightseeing, catch fish, and even surf the ocean waves, all on a paddle board!

There are different types of boards for different types of water, too, so you can take a paddle board virtually anywhere! For flat water, such as lakes and rivers, there are wider and longer boards. For ocean water, which is usually more choppy, the boards are narrower and shorter, but more sturdy.

Our paddle boards are standard “ocean” boards that work for all levels of experience. They, like our kayaks, are usually rented out as part of a boat package. Check our website for more information.

Check out all of our water sport packages here to find the best one for you!

We also offer boat charter services, which you can find more information about on our website!

We hope you are inspired to seek the thrill this weekend!
